First Week At New Job Supervisers Terrible?

By Brian and Jeff On September 25, 2009 Under Commercial Real Estate Loans

I found on the first day my boss had marijuana in his company truck ashtray
I land this new job im happy to be there we work on property commercial real estate im suppose to get my own truck. so i wont be riding with him often but on my first day of work we took a drive in his truck because there was an emergency at one of the sites when i noticed his ashtray is sitting wide open and there are like 50 marijuana joints in it so i said “Do you roll your own cigarettes? He says yea and chuckles” and pulls out a cigarette out of a pack 2 minutes later. So now im thinking I should report this to human resources when I went for the job they gave me a drug test and a hand book of how they run a tight ship. no sexual harassment, no under the influence, keep your vehicle clean, furthermore I had to take a drug test for the job and then this bull crap …why isn’t this guy leading by example. What has this world come to? Then we stop and have lunch and he’s sitting there calling woman ***** and cursing like a drunken sailor and calling me Bro total lack of respect for anyone not to mention were eating at a clients restaurant (quiznos) to the point Jeff converse has to say “would you please watch your mouth your offending me”. The whole episode was straight appalling

Ok so today I go thru my normal routine things are all good I handle the daily routine issues a few emergencies at 2:30 I decided to go by the other sites and make the rounds visual inspections and possibly light maintenance of those site.and if time permits I will vacuum out the rear of the vehicle and bring it up to company standards,(or as was explained to me) and stop into the office to drop off my paper work see Stacia to make sure she had all the information she needed from me to complete my employment process so I get to the main office @ 3:30 attempt to vacuum out the company van and I find the power inverter will not power the vacuum I tried to power it from the other van and it did not work there either …so I proceeded to finish my work log report then at 3:45pm I stopped into the main office. Allison the receptionist was there I asked if Stacia was in she said she was not. Then I asked for Jeff converse to review the days HVAC issues in the Genzyme Building …Allison said he was not in so I said ok then I guess im done here thanks have a good night. Now its 3:50Pm I go get into my personal vehicle and get ready to leave and Jeff walker pulls in the parking lot I pulled over to him to see if he needed anything last minute and to ask him questions of how the power inverters work ..and he says to me “you cant leave at quarter of and they asked me to watch you so im going to have to report this” to which I explained yesterday I stayed a few minutes late and I wasn’t complaining and Jeff converse felt free to call me at 4:30 and I had absolutely no problem speaking to him regarding the days issues I also explained that the office asked me keep my cell phone on and to except calls regargding company business after hours and check the company computer for HVAC issues after hours & I was offered absolutely no compensation for these services therefore 10 minutes is a wash pretty much and he replied “oh you have to do that” to which I was a little confused by the reply . and when I was interviewing for the position Jeff converse explained he didn’t want a robot employee and micro management wasn’t going to be an issue because I could be called upon at any given moment to stay a little late to help out on projects or emergencies and he would like my cooperation in return in these cases or on knowledge I might have regarding past experiences ect reply and I acknowledged that it wouldn’t be a problem at all im very flexible. During emergencies or even for extra projects. so Jeff walker then stated he would address it with Jeff converse and I said I would also do the same I wasn’t trying to cheat the company in any way shape or form so I immediately asked him if he could assist me for the final 5 minutes with the power inverter to operate the vacuum and he explained the inverter would not provide enough power enough for what I was trying to do and we conversed about a project behind the metro 9 property Jeff walker provided me his insight and we wrapped up for the evening.

I understand that you’d be annoyed by the supervisor saying he’s going to report you when you’ve seen the things he does. However, since you just started the job, I think you should play by the rules so they have no reason to question you. If you’re out all day by yourself in the company truck where no one knows exactly what you’re doing, it is reasonable to ask a new employee why they’re taking off a few minutes early.
They’re still trying to get a feel for you, what kind of employee you’re going to be so don’t give them anything they can hold against you. Lay low for a month or two, see how the office politics there play out. It seems like you have plenty to do on your own and don’t have to interact constantly with these people. It also sounds like you’re a good worker so if you like the job, be smart about it by learning how things really work there. No place ever follows the rulebook to the letter.
If you do get called in on anything, then share whatever information you may have. Tell them you just didn’t want to rock the boat when you first started if asked why you didn’t report it sooner. I would definitely mention the bad language in a public place if your company name is identified on your clothing or vehicle. It gives people a bad impression of the company.
Good luck with the new job. I hope it works out for you.
